Eye Health in the Czechoslovakian Vlciak: What We Know and What We Still Need to Learn

The Czechoslovakian Vlciak has earned a reputation as a generally healthy and robust breed. Unlike many purebred dogs that struggle with numerous inherited eye diseases, reports of serious ophthalmologic disorders in the Vlciak have been relatively uncommon. However, as our breed matures and scientific research expands, we are beginning to learn more about the eye health challenges that may exist within our population.
What We Know
For many years, there was very little published research specifically examining eye diseases in the Czechoslovakian Vlciak. Most information came from routine breeding examinations and anecdotal reports from breeders and owners. Recently, researchers conducted one of the first breed-specific studies examining eye health in Czechoslovakian Vlciak. The study evaluated more than one hundred dogs and identified a condition known as multifocal retinal dysplasia (MRD) in approximately 5% of those examined.
Understanding Retinal Dysplasia
Retinal dysplasia is a general term used to describe abnormal development of the retina, the light sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. The condition can vary greatly in severity, ranging from minor retinal folds that have little effect on vision to complete retinal detachment and blindness. Veterinary ophthalmologists classify retinal dysplasia into three primary forms based on the extent of retinal involvement:
Multifocal Retinal Dysplasia (MRD)
The mildest form. Small retinal folds or rosettes are present, but affected dogs usually retain normal vision and live healthy, active lives. In some cases, minor blind spots may occur.
Geographic Retinal Dysplasia
A more extensive form characterized by larger, irregularly shaped areas of retinal malformation. These defects can interfere with vision and may contribute to partial retinal detachment.
Total Retinal Dysplasia
The most severe form. The retina develops abnormally and fails to attach properly, resulting in complete retinal detachment and blindness. Additional eye conditions, such as cataracts or glaucoma, may also be present.
Causes and Treatment
The most significant forms of canine retinal dysplasia are hereditary, although dysplasia may also be found with maternal viral infections (e.g., canine herpes, feline panleukopenia, ovine blue tongue, bovine viral diarrhea), toxicities in utero, and multiple ocular anomalies. Unfortunately, there is no treatment that can repair or reverse retinal dysplasia because the retina developed abnormally before birth. MRD usually requires no treatment. Most dogs have normal vision and live completely normal lives. Retinal dysplasia is considered hereditary in many dog breeds, including Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, and Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. While the more severe forms can significantly affect vision, dogs with MRD typically experience little to no impact on their daily lives. This research is significant because it provides the first objective evidence that inherited eye conditions may be present in the Czechoslovakian Vlciak population, even if they are not currently causing widespread clinical problems.

What We Do Not Know
While the study answered some important questions, it also highlighted how much remains unknown.
We still do not know:
• How common multifocal retinal dysplasia is throughout the worldwide population.
• Whether certain bloodlines are more affected than others.
• Whether the frequency of the condition differs between countries.
• Whether additional inherited eye diseases exist within the breed but have not yet been identified.
• How genetic diversity influences the occurrence of eye disorders.
The Czechoslovakian Vlciak is an international breed with populations spread across Europe, North America, and other regions. Without comprehensive health data from a broad range of dogs, it is difficult to determine whether the findings from one study accurately reflect the breed as a whole.
Why Eye Examinations Matter Routine eye examinations performed by certified veterinary ophthalmologists remain one of the most valuable tools available to breeders. Programs such as ECVO (European College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists) and OFA Eye Certification provide standardized evaluations that can identify inherited or suspected hereditary eye conditions before breeding decisions are made. Even when a breed appears healthy, ongoing screening helps establish baseline information and can detect emerging issues before they become widespread.
The Connection to Genetic Diversity
Eye health and genetic diversity are closely linked. When a breed's gene pool becomes narrow, harmful recessive genes have a greater opportunity to pair together and produce disease. Conversely, maintaining a broad and diverse genetic base can help reduce the risk of inherited disorders becoming concentrated within the population. This is one reason why genetic diversity testing is so important. By understanding how diversity is distributed within the breed, breeders can make informed mating decisions that preserve both health and genetic resources. Future research combining DNA diversity testing with eye examination results may help identify whether certain genetic patterns are associated with retinal dysplasia or other eye conditions.
Looking Forward
The discovery of multifocal retinal dysplasia in a small percentage of Czechoslovakian Vlciaks should not be viewed as a cause for alarm. Rather, it serves as a reminder that no breed is immune to inherited health concerns, and that continued monitoring is essential. The Czechoslovakian Vlciak remains one of the healthier modern breeds, but responsible stewardship requires more than celebrating current health. It requires collecting data, supporting research, and maintaining the genetic diversity necessary to protect future generations. As breeders, owners, and enthusiasts, our goal should be to continue learning—not only what health challenges exist today, but what steps we can take now to ensure the long-term health and vitality of this remarkable breed.
